Why Dairy Brands Still Choose Glass

Posted on

While plastic jugs and paper cartons dominate today’s dairy aisles, glass milk bottles continue to serve a niche market.

For dairies looking to differentiate their products and create a premium, eco-friendly customer experience, glass packaging offers several unique advantages.

Quality

One benefit to using glass bottles for milk is quality retention. Not only does glass keep the milk inside colder for longer, but it also doesn’t alter the taste of it. Glass is non-porous and impermeable (meaning that gasses and liquids cannot pass through the material).

This means that, unlike plastic or paper containers, the flavor of the contents of the glass bottle will remain unchanged. This means your milk will taste as fresh as it would at the farm, more so than it would if stored in a plastic or paper container.

Sustainability

While the initial cost of manufacturing and supplying glass bottles is more, they are sustainable and recyclable. Well made glass bottles are durable and reusable. Most dairies that use glass bottles offer a return program, where they wash and reuse the glass bottles they sell, meaning they can get several times the use of a bottle they paid for once. Depending on the success of the return program, this could offset the initial price of the bottle.

When a glass bottle is no longer fit to be reused, it is more recyclable than any plastic or paper alternative. Glass milk bottles are more likely to end up in the recycling bin than plastic or paper ones, because people are more conscious about how they recycle glass.

Additionally, glass has an endless recycling lifecycle, which means if it is disposed of correctly it can be recycled an infinite amount of times. For comparison, plastic milk bottles made from High-Density Polyethylene (plastic #2) can generally be recycled back into milk bottles 1 to 3 times before the plastic degrades too much to maintain food-grade quality. From there, it can become different plastic products, such as plastic lumber or outdoor furniture.

Milk cartons are also recycled, and can be made into various paper or tissue products approximately 5 to 7 times before the fibers are too weak to form new paper products.

Customer Preference

Some consumers prefer glass because it does not contain plastic and is perceived as a more natural packaging option. This can make glass bottles a first choice to customers who value natural, sustainable products and are willing to pay a premium for them.

Some customers report seeking milk in glass bottles, and switching dairies when they find one that provides them. Choosing glass can build customer loyalty, which is a valuable asset to have when choosing a more expensive packaging option.

So why is it used so little?

The main concern is cost. It is cheaper to manufacture paper or plastic containers than glass. Glass is also more expensive to transport, due to its weight and fragility. Additionally, there’s always the risk of damage- glass can be easily broken during transport or out on the shelf. However, with a committed customer base and a strong return deposit program, the initial cost of supplying glass bottles can be offset. By producing milk in glass bottles, dairies choose quality for their customers. They also strengthen their reputation and branding by standing out with packaging that is both superior benefit wise and aesthetically pleasing.
